Spam & Menthols

After I got home from work today, my sister and I hustled off to the grocery store before it closed early for Christmas Eve. Since we're urban dwellers we tend not to have any actual food hanging about the apartment, so we bought a lot of things to graze on throughout Christmas Day before we go out for Chinese. We got the basics; three types of cheese, olives, rosemary bread, crackers, pickled vegetables, smoked herring, crudités, champagne, and egg nog. We got into line about 15 minutes before the store closed, so there were long lines at every cash register as people bought the makings for their Christmas dinners.

The woman behind us bought a tin of Spam and a pack of menthols. However, perhaps in the spirit of the holiday, it was Turkey Spam.

Merry Christmas, ya'll.

Still frozen

A friend responded to an email in which I expressed my desire to return to Seattle, "Dorothy was stuck in the Emerald City, trying to return to Kansas. You're stuck in Kansas, trying to return the Emerald City."

The ice hasn't melted, though the freezing rain no longer falls. The trees are crystalline. The birds returned this evening. I wonder where they went to escape the ice storm? Perhaps they remained in the trees, but were frozen to the branches, encased in ice and unable to sing until they thawed.

O the weather outside is frightful...

I flew into Kansas City last night a few hours before they stopped allowing planes to land due to an ice storm. We worked from the hotel today because of the freezing rain, though the predictions seem to have been more dire than reality. The trees are encased in ice. Hopefully the weather improves before Friday so I can get the heck outta Kansas. The best part about leaving is being able to say, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore." No one should ever pass up the opportunity to say that.
